Franken-house
I think that most people who have renovated a house know what I mean when I refer to my home as a “Franken-house”.
Basically it boils down to this: You’ve bought a house/condo/whatever thinking that you can do some quick renovations and either live there for a while of flip it in short order. Only thing is, even though you’ve spent time inspecting, researching and generally going over the house with a fine tooth comb, you realize there’s a bunch of things you need to do to the place other than what you’d originally thought of. Or you find that you have to take care of a laundry list of fixes to get to the thing you really want to do. In short the house takes on a life of its own, and you’re list of projects starts to take on monstrous proportions.
Case in point: My wife and I bought a home around last August (2006) and we begain to process of making renovations (with the help of family in some cases). We specifically picked the place we bought because of its location, neighborhood and (after an inspecition) condition (i.e. it had potential without having too much potential). But the further we move forward, we’ve seemly found that there’s always another problem to fix, or another project that needs to be undertaken to get to the real meat of what we want done.
So, on this page I’ll be posting our progression (both positive and negative) in an attempt (albeit weak) to make myself more accountable to getting things done. I’ll also have links to helpful information and some howtos I’ll be developing from my experiences.
